Ismail Sabri To Solve Taekwondo Quandary

SHAH ALAM, Aug 31 (Bernama) -- Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ismail Sabri Yaakob plans to meet all three taekwondo associations in the country to solve ongoing problems besetting the associations and among them.

"I am in the midst of solving the problems which have affected our participation in sports events like the recent Beijing Olympics," he told reporters after presenting prizes to the winners of the National Invitation Taekwondo Global Malaysia 2008 here Sunday.

He was commenting on a proposal by the Malaysian Global Taekwondo Federation (MGTF) for the formation of a federation encompassing the three taekwondo bodies as a solution to the problem.

Malaysia was represented by two women taekwondo exponents, Elaine Teoh and Che Chew Chan, at the recently concluded Beijing Olympics but neither delivered any medal.

Ismail Sabri said he hoped that the problems affecting the MGTF and the two other associations, the Malaysian Taekwondo Association and the Malaysian ITF Taekwondo Federation, could be solved quickly to enable taekwando to be included in the Malaysia Games in Melaka in 2010.

The Sukma committee had decided to exclude taekwondo from the biennial games, he added.

"Taekwondo used to glorify the country's image in the international arena. Despite the problem, we still managed to send our exponents to the Beijing Olympics," he said.

In the National Invitation Taekwondo Global Malaysia 2008, Kedah B Kulim emerged overall champions to lift the Yang di-Pertuan Agong trophy.

Twenty-one teams from Singapore, China and Malaysia took part in the three-day inaugural tournament.

Ismail Sabri Akan Jumpa Persatuan Taekwondo Selesai Masalah
